What is a Battery Energy Storage System?
Electricity systems must continuously balance the amount of electricity generated with the amount being consumed. When supply and demand change unexpectedly, the system must respond quickly to maintain stable operations.
BESS offer a way to manage some of these fluctuations. By storing electricity when it is available and releasing it when needed, batteries introduce greater flexibility into how electricity is supplied and managed.
A BESS works by converting electrical energy into chemical energy for storage and converting it back into electrical energy when required. Unlike a conventional power plant, it does not produce new energy. Instead, it allows electricity generated at one point in time to be used later.
A grid-connected BESS is more than a collection of batteries. It combines several components that work together to store, manage and deliver electricity. Battery modules provide the storage capacity, while a Power Conversion System (PCS) enables electricity to move between the batteries and the grid. Control systems manage charging and discharging, monitor battery conditions and coordinate the facility’s operation.
Supporting equipment, including transformers, cooling systems, protection devices and fire safety systems, enables the facility to operate safely and reliably.
Together, these components allow BESS to function as an active part of the electricity network.
